It's Saturday night at the Westmount Square restaurant, Tavern on the Square, and most every seat is taken. The ambiance feels more like a dinner party than a restaurant. On my right is a teenager inhaling a plate of pasta while his dad eats a hanger steak with a pastel-coloured martini. In front of me are two separate groups celebrating birthdays, and to my left is a foursome of seventysomethings dressed to the nines. Regulars, no doubt; most greet the service staff by name. Watching people waving to friends across the room, I feel a bit like an outsider. The hostess glows as some customers arrive, but glowers when I request she change my table. Our waitress, though, could not be friendlier and within 10 minutes I, too, am starting to feel like part of the family. Good thing, too, because with so many fans, the Tavern is one tough restaurant to criticize.
